Kicking up your basics with color, print, texture and/or shine

One of the best pieces of advice I received as a new mother was, “Keep it simple.” It didn’t quite work out in all areas of motherhood, but it did make getting dressed easier.

I decided to create a uniform-type look. My outfits would start out by creating a column with the same neutral color top and bottom. I would then add a third piece like a cardigan, denim jacket, or blazer that had some color, print, texture, and/or shine. This look was not only simple and classic but just by the physics of a column made me look slimmer. I love the art of illusion, and this trick works every time.
